SK hynix has officially broken ground on a new $4 billion-plus semiconductor facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, marking a major step toward bringing advanced AI memory production to the United States.
The South Korean chipmaker held the groundbreaking ceremony Thursday at Purdue University as it begins construction of what will become its first U.S. production hub for high bandwidth memory, or HBM.
The facility is expected to play a major role in the growing American AI industry while creating thousands of jobs across Indiana and the broader U.S. semiconductor supply chain.
Indiana Plant Will Make Next Generation AI Memory
The new facility will focus on advanced packaging and testing for HBM, a type of high-performance memory used in AI systems.
HBM allows large amounts of data to move quickly between memory and processors, making it an important component in the data centers powering today’s artificial intelligence boom.
SK hynix said the Indiana facility is expected to begin mass production of next-generation HBM in the second half of 2029.
The company plans to complete the facility’s cleanroom by October 2028 before moving toward production. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to employ about 1,000 workers.
$4 Billion Investment Brings AI Manufacturing to Indiana
SK hynix expects the total investment in the Indiana project to exceed $4 billion.
The 133-acre site in West Lafayette will house the HBM production operation as well as an advanced packaging research and development testbed.
The company says the facility will allow it to package and test memory products in the United States before supplying them to American customers.
SK hynix currently produces advanced wafers in South Korea that can be sent to Indiana for packaging and testing. The company says this setup will help create a more connected U.S. and South Korean production network while expanding domestic semiconductor capabilities.
Project Expected to Create Thousands of Jobs
The Indiana investment is expected to have an impact well beyond the plant itself.
SK hynix estimates the project could create approximately 7,000 direct and indirect jobs through construction, operations and the companies supporting the facility.
More than 100 companies are being considered as suppliers for materials, components and equipment needed to operate the Indiana site.
That could give Indiana businesses and workers a larger role in the semiconductor industry as demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow.
Purdue University Joins the AI Research Effort
The project also brings Purdue University into a closer research partnership with SK hynix.
The company and Purdue signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on advanced packaging research, including technologies related to HBM and system integration.
The research partnership is designed to help develop new semiconductor technologies while giving students and researchers opportunities to work with one of the world’s major memory chip companies.
Purdue officials have also highlighted the potential for the project to create new career opportunities for engineering and science graduates in Indiana.
Indiana Officials Welcome the Investment
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun and U.S. Sen. Todd Young attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside Purdue officials and SK Group executives.
Young said the investment represents another step toward rebuilding semiconductor manufacturing in the United States and creating high-paying jobs in Indiana.
Braun similarly described the project as an opportunity to expand Indiana’s role in advanced technology and semiconductor manufacturing.
The project also received support connected to the federal CHIPS and Science Act, which has been used to encourage semiconductor investment and expand domestic production.
Why AI Memory Matters to the U.S.
The timing of the Indiana project comes as American companies continue to pour money into AI data centers and computing infrastructure.
Powerful AI systems require large amounts of high-speed memory to process information efficiently. As AI models become more demanding, the need for advanced memory products such as HBM has grown.
SK hynix’s Indiana facility is designed to bring part of that supply chain closer to U.S. customers.
The company says the project could help strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain while supporting the broader U.S. technology industry.
A New AI Hub for West Lafayette
For West Lafayette, the project represents a major expansion of the region’s technology and manufacturing ambitions.
The facility will connect semiconductor manufacturing, university research, workforce development and local suppliers in one growing technology ecosystem.
SK hynix also plans to work with universities and research organizations in the Midwest to develop semiconductor talent for the next generation of AI technology.
Commercial operations are expected to begin with a workforce of roughly 1,000 people, while the wider project is expected to support thousands more jobs through its supply network.
SK hynix Targets 2029 for U.S. HBM Production
The Indiana facility is still several years away from full production, but the groundbreaking marks the official start of a project that could become an important part of America’s AI infrastructure.
SK hynix expects the cleanroom to be ready in 2028 and next-generation HBM mass production to begin during the second half of 2029.
If the project stays on schedule, West Lafayette will become home to one of the country’s most significant new AI memory manufacturing operations, giving Indiana a larger role in the race to build the technology behind America’s next generation of AI systems.
