A new film festival is putting artificial intelligence on the big screen as the inaugural CLOWD AI Film Festival opens October 7 at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California.
The two-day event runs through October 8 and brings together filmmakers, creative technologists and entertainment professionals to explore how AI is changing the way movies are created, produced and shared with audiences.
22 Finalists Bring AI Filmmaking to the Big Screen
CLOWD selected 22 finalists from more than 11 countries for its inaugural competition, highlighting filmmakers experimenting with AI-driven storytelling.
The festival is designed around films created through collaboration between human creators and artificial intelligence rather than treating AI as a replacement for traditional filmmaking.
Selected films will be screened inside the nearly century-old Alex Theatre, creating an unusual contrast between one of Glendale’s historic movie houses and one of the newest technologies influencing the entertainment business.
Festival Looks Beyond AI Film Prompts
CLOWD is not limiting its programming to movie screenings.
Panels during the festival are expected to examine the broader AI filmmaking process, including education, emerging production methods, hybrid workflows, financing, distribution and how creators can find audiences for AI-assisted work.
That gives the event a broader entertainment industry focus at a time when Hollywood and independent filmmakers are trying to figure out how artificial intelligence fits into the future of production.
Filmmakers Must Put AI at the Center of Their Work
CLOWD requires AI to play a meaningful role in submitted films, with at least 75 percent of the visual shots required to be AI-generated.
The festival is platform-agnostic, allowing creators to use different AI tools while retaining ownership of their films. Participants must also disclose the AI tools they used and explain how those tools contributed to their work.
The competition includes categories for short narratives, music videos, fantasy, long-form commercials, utopian themes and student filmmaking.
CLOWD to Present Its First ICON AWARD
The festival will also introduce the CLOWD ICON AWARD, with creative technologist Nik Kleverov selected as its first recipient.
Kleverov is scheduled to receive the award during the festival’s October 8 closing events at the Alex Theatre. He is the co-founder and chief creative officer of Native Foreign, an Emmy-recognized creative agency, and has worked on early generative-media projects.
The award gives the festival another way to spotlight the people helping shape AI’s role in entertainment rather than focusing solely on the technology itself.
A Historic Theater Meets a New Kind of Filmmaking
The choice of the Alex Theatre adds another layer to the event.
The Glendale venue is more than 100 years old and has witnessed major changes in cinema, from silent movies and synchronized sound to color, digital filmmaking and now AI-assisted production. CLOWD is using that history as part of its larger argument that new technology can become another chapter in the evolution of filmmaking.
CLOWD Opens a New Conversation for Independent Filmmakers
For independent creators, the festival represents an opportunity to show AI-assisted work to a live audience rather than leaving the films inside online feeds or private demonstrations.
CLOWD also plans to connect filmmakers with industry professionals and explore opportunities involving distribution, education and future screenings. The festival says selected films may also be featured through additional showcases and a planned national tour.
The Future of AI Cinema Gets a Theater Audience
The CLOWD AI Film Festival arrives at a moment when artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday conversations about Hollywood and creative work.
By putting AI-created films inside a historic California movie theater, the festival is offering a simple test for the emerging technology: whether audiences will connect with the stories, not just the tools used to make them.
The inaugural CLOWD AI Film Festival takes place October 7 and 8 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, with the opening event scheduled for October 7 at 5:30 p.m.
