Netflix Sets October Release for New LEGO Friends Musical

LEGO is bringing its colorful world to life in a new way with LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical, an upcoming musical special headed to Netflix this month.

The project combines live-action performers, physical LEGO elements and digital environments to create a hybrid experience. It is also the first live-action television project from the LEGO Group, with High School Musical director and producer Kenny Ortega serving as executive producer.

The special is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on October 16, 2026, giving families a new LEGO-themed title to watch during the fall season.

Kenny Ortega Leads the Musical Project

Ortega brings plenty of musical experience to the LEGO project.

The filmmaker is best known for directing and producing major youth entertainment projects including High School Musical, Descendants and Hocus Pocus. He also previously worked with Netflix on the musical series Julie and the Phantoms.

Paul Becker is directing and handling choreography, while the production uses virtual production technology from Final Pixel.

The combination gives the LEGO Friends franchise a distinctly different look from traditional animated LEGO productions.

A Girl Gets Pulled Into Heartlake City

The story follows a young girl named Daisy, who builds her own world out of LEGO bricks.

Her adventure takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a mysterious key and is transported into Heartlake City, the colorful setting associated with the LEGO Friends franchise.

Once there, Daisy meets familiar LEGO Friends characters and becomes involved in a mission to save a beloved treehouse.

The adventure combines friendship, music and fantasy as Daisy searches for a way back home.

The LEGO Musical Uses Real Actors and Digital Environments

One of the most unusual parts of the project is the way it was filmed.

Rather than relying entirely on traditional animation, the production combines real actors with oversized LEGO props and virtual environments created with real-time technology.

The production was filmed on stages in London using LED volume technology and Unreal Engine environments. This approach allows performers to act within digitally created LEGO-inspired locations while maintaining a live-action appearance.

The result is intended to bridge the gap between a traditional live-action production and the familiar brick-built look of LEGO.

The Cast Brings Heartlake City to Life

The special features a young ensemble that includes Jada Langley as Daisy, along with Gino Ochello, Hannah Gracie, Angelina Li, Gracie McGonigal and Meesha Garbett.

The cast also includes Danita Walcott Nicholls, Darcy Jacobs, Hamish Skeoch and Kevin N. Golding.

The performers are joined by LEGO Friends characters as Daisy explores the fictional city and becomes part of its latest adventure.

When Can You Watch LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical?

Netflix is set to release LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical globally on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The special is also scheduled to premiere on YouTube on the same day, giving families another way to watch the new LEGO musical.

The release arrives as Netflix continues expanding its LEGO lineup. The streamer recently added a LEGO ONE PIECE animated special, showing the growing range of LEGO-based entertainment available on the platform.

A New Direction for LEGO Entertainment

The Heartlake City musical gives LEGO another opportunity to experiment with storytelling beyond traditional brick animation.

With a proven musical filmmaker behind the project and a production that mixes real performers with virtual environments, the special is taking a different approach to the familiar LEGO formula.

For families who grew up with LEGO Friends or fans looking for a lighthearted musical adventure, the October release offers a new way to experience the Heartlake City characters.
