Temple Opens 2026 Football Season Against Rhode Island at Lincoln Financial Field

Temple University will open its 2026 college football season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Owls host the University of Rhode Island Rams at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, with the game streaming on ESPN+. Temple’s official schedule lists the matchup as Community Day.

The season opener gives Temple its first opportunity to put a new campaign on the field under head coach K.C. Keeler, who is entering his second season leading the Owls.

A New Season Begins in Philadelphia

Temple will begin the season at Lincoln Financial Field, the home stadium it shares with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The matchup against Rhode Island is a nonconference game and marks the first meeting between the two programs since 1975. Temple won that previous matchup 45-6.

Rhode Island is coming off an 11-3 season, according to Temple’s official schedule information, making the opener more intriguing than a routine early-season tuneup.

The Rams are scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia after opening their own season against Merrimack on Aug. 28. Rhode Island’s official schedule lists the Temple game for 2 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Temple’s Quarterback Battle Adds Intrigue

One of the biggest storylines heading into the opener is Temple’s quarterback competition.

The Owls are evaluating Penn State transfer Jaxon Smolik and Washington State transfer Ajani Sheppard for the starting job. Temple offensive coordinator Tyler Walker said the competition remains ongoing, and both quarterbacks could potentially see playing time during the season.

Sheppard recently produced the stronger statistical performance during a Temple scrimmage, completing 13 of 19 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Smolik completed 9 of 16 passes for 77 yards.

The decision could become one of the most closely watched developments when Temple takes the field against Rhode Island.

Community Day at Lincoln Financial Field

The season opener will also serve as Temple’s Community Day.

The promotion is part of the university’s 2026 football schedule and gives the game an added campus and community component beyond the action on the field.

Temple is scheduled to host seven home games at Lincoln Financial Field during the 2026 season, according to the university’s promotional schedule announcement.

A Busy Labor Day Weekend in Philadelphia

The Temple game falls during Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest stretches of the late summer calendar in Philadelphia.

The city is hosting a wide range of sports, concerts, festivals and family events over the holiday weekend, making the Temple opener part of a larger weekend of activity across the region.

For Temple fans, however, the focus will be on the Owls’ return to the field and the beginning of a new season.
