obot vacuums have become a familiar part of smart homes, but one major problem has remained: stairs.
Roborock is now showing off a robot designed to tackle that problem. The company’s Saros Rover, a wheel-legged robotic vacuum, is making its European debut at IFA 2026 in Berlin after first gaining attention at CES earlier this year.
Unlike traditional robot vacuums that stay on one floor, the Saros Rover is designed to move between levels and clean individual steps as it goes.
Saros Rover Takes on One of the Biggest Robot Vacuum Problems
Most robot vacuums can navigate around furniture, cross thresholds and avoid everyday obstacles, but a staircase has traditionally been a hard stop.
The Saros Rover takes a very different approach. Instead of using a conventional fixed-wheel design, it uses independently adjustable wheel-legs that allow the machine to change its position as it moves across uneven surfaces.
Roborock says the system uses motion sensors and three-dimensional spatial data to navigate stairs and other challenging areas. The company is positioning the Rover as a robot that can actually clean the stairs rather than simply find a way to reach another floor.
The Robot Can Clean Individual Stair Steps
The biggest selling point of the Saros Rover is its ability to clean individual steps while moving up a staircase.
That is a significant change from other approaches to the stair problem. Some competing systems shown in recent years have focused on carrying a conventional robot vacuum between floors. Roborock’s concept attempts to keep the cleaning machine itself moving throughout the process.
The Rover has been demonstrated navigating different types of stairs, including curved and carpeted staircases. It is also designed to handle slopes and complicated changes in floor height.
A Wheel-Leg Design Gives It More Mobility
The Saros Rover’s unusual appearance comes from its wheel-leg architecture.
The legs can adjust independently, allowing the robot to stabilize itself and change its body position as it encounters steps and other obstacles. Demonstrations have also shown the machine handling uneven terrain and maintaining its balance during movement.
The design could eventually help robotic vacuums move beyond the mostly flat environments they have traditionally been built for.
It Is Still Not a Store-Shelf Product
Despite the impressive demonstrations, American consumers should not expect to order a Saros Rover yet.
Roborock has not announced a retail price or a launch date for the stair-cleaning robot. Current coverage continues to describe the Rover as a concept or demonstration product rather than a commercially available vacuum.
That distinction is important. A robot successfully climbing stairs at a technology show is very different from a consumer product reliably operating on thousands of different staircases inside American homes.
Factors such as carpet, stair dimensions, narrow landings, pets, loose objects and safety around people would all need to be addressed before a product like this becomes a mainstream household appliance.
Roborock Is Expanding Its Robot Lineup
The Saros Rover is only one part of Roborock’s broader IFA 2026 lineup.
The company is also showcasing the Saros 20 Flow, Qrevo Edge 3 Pro and other cleaning products. Roborock’s U.S. IFA lineup includes robot vacuums, wet-dry cleaners and robotic outdoor products.
For American shoppers, the Qrevo Edge 3 Pro is particularly relevant because it is being introduced for the U.S. market. The company says it features a low-profile design and an adaptive chassis designed to handle large floor transitions.
But those machines are still different from the Rover. They can improve mobility across floors, while the Saros Rover is specifically designed to tackle the stairs themselves.
Could Stair-Cleaning Robots Become the Next Big Thing?
The Saros Rover points toward a potentially important shift in the robot vacuum market.
For years, manufacturers have focused on improving suction, mopping, navigation, obstacle detection and automated emptying. Stairs have largely remained outside that equation.
A reliable stair-climbing robot could change how people think about automated home cleaning, particularly in two-story and multilevel homes.
The technology still has to move from impressive demonstrations to a dependable consumer product. Until Roborock announces pricing, availability and final specifications, the Saros Rover is best viewed as a glimpse at where robot vacuums could be headed next.
