After she starred in Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence had to disappoint many of her fans with an announcement: She plans on retiring from these roles.
I wanted to talk about Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence has a problem with action movies- or, more specifically, the way women are portrayed in them.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress spoke out about the double standard between the way male and female characters are written in such films.
“When you look at movies and compare how men and women are described in the scripts, it’s pretty shocking,” she said. “I don’t think there are enough female characters that are allowed to be messy and have flaws.”
She went on to say that she believes this lack of complexity is why Hollywood has yet to produce a female-led action movie that’s been a runaway success.
“I think part of the reason why there hasn’t been a big female-led action movie is because studios feel like audiences don’t want to see it,” Lawrence continued. “But if they made one that was really good, I think people would flock to see it.”
The 26-year-old Hunger Games star has long been an outspoken advocate for gender equality in Hollywood, and her latest comments are sure to add fuel to the fire.
What her bones are to pick
The Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has some serious bones to pick about the action movie genre. In a recent interview, Lawrence spoke about her experiences filming the “Hunger Games” franchise and how she was frequently left out of the action.
“I was so hungry to do more physical stuff and I really loved it, but a lot of times my character was left out of the action,” Lawrence said. “It was Katniss standing around watching everyone else fighting.”
Lawrence also spoke about how this kind of thing happens to female actresses in general, not just in the “Hunger Games” movies. “It’s frustrating when you’re like ‘I can do that! Why can’t I be in on the fun?'” she said.
The actress isn’t wrong – there is a serious lack of strong female roles in action movies. Not only are women significantly underrepresented in major action franchises, but they are often relegated to lame love interests or damsels in distress. This needs to change, and hopefully with more outspoken actresses like Jennifer Lawrence leading the charge, we will start to see some real progress.
Opportunities for women in lead roles
In the wake of the success of her new film “Red Sparrow”, Jennifer Lawrence has reignited the discussion around opportunities for women in lead roles in action movies.
Despite being one of the most successful actresses of her generation, Lawrence has repeatedly been vocal about the lack of good roles for women in Hollywood. In a recent interview with Variety, she spoke about how her “Red Sparrow” character was initially written as a man.
“I was like, ‘No, this is a woman.’ And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, you’re right,'” Lawrence told Variety. “It just makes me feel sick that there are these incredible roles out there and we’re still having this conversation.”
While it is certainly true that opportunities for women in lead roles are still lagging behind those for men, there have been some recent positive developments. The success of films like “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” have shown that audiences are hungering for more diverse stories.
And while the majority of big-budget action movies still star men, it is worth noting that some of the most successful films in recent years – including “The Hunger Games” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” – have had female leads.
There is also reason to hope that things will continue to improve. With more and more women working behind the scenes in Hollywood – as directors, writers and producers – it is only a matter of time before we see even more strong female characters
General thoughts on the situation
It seems that Jennifer Lawrence has some thoughts about action movies – and she’s not afraid to share them! In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actress spoke out about her experiences working on action films, and how she feels about the genre as a whole.
“I think that the problem with action movies is that they’re usually so one-dimensional,” Lawrence said. “The good guys are always just fighting for justice, and the bad guys are always just trying to kill people. There’s no shades of gray.”
The Hunger Games star went on to say that she believes this lack of complexity is why action movies don’t tend to win major awards. “I think that Hollywood is kind of stuck in this cycle of making big, dumb blockbusters because that’s what makes money,” she explained. “But I think audiences are ready for something more than that.”
Do you agree with Jennifer Lawrence? Do you think that Hollywood should start making more complex, thought-provoking action movies? Let us know in the comments!
Why her experience is not unique
When it comes to action movies, Jennifer Lawrence is not a fan. In a recent interview, the actress spoke out about her distaste for the genre, saying that she finds them “boring” and “loud.”
Lawrence is far from the only one who doesn’t enjoy action movies. In fact, there are plenty of people who don’t care for them. Here are a few reasons why someone might not be a fan of action movies:
1. They’re too loud.
Action movies tend to be pretty loud, which can be annoying or even overwhelming for some people. If you’re someone who prefers a more subdued movie-watching experience, then action flicks are probably not for you.
2. They’re often predictable.
If you’ve seen one action movie, you’ve pretty much seen them all. They all follow a similar formula: good guys vs. bad guys, lots of explosions, etc. If you’re looking for something fresh and original, an action movie is probably not going to cut it.
3. They’re often poorly written.
Let’s face it: many action movies are not known for their great writing. If you prefer complex storylines and well-developed characters, then you might want to steer clear of this genre.
What do you think?
This is a question that I am sure many people are asking themselves right now. It seems that everywhere you look, people are talking about the new Jennifer Lawrence movie, “Red Sparrow”. The movie is getting a lot of mixed reviews, with some people loving it and others hating it.
Personally, I loved the movie. I thought it was very well done and Jennifer Lawrence did an amazing job. I will say that the beginning is a bit slow, but once you get into the meat of the story, it is hard to stop watching.
There are definitely some graphic scenes in the movie, so if you are squeamish, you may want to avoid it. But overall, I thought it was a great film and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good action movie.
