A White House official said that the White House will send three million doses of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccination to Indonesia Friday. This will be one of the largest single shipments to date.
Indonesia has recently increased its Covid-19 restrictions after a record-breaking number of coronavirus deaths per day. According to Indonesia’s Covid-19 taskforce, Indonesia recorded nearly 35,000 coronavirus cases and 1,040 deaths from the virus on Wednesday. The highly contagious Delta variant is widely spread throughout the country.
CNN was told by a White House official that they were supporting the Indonesian people in fighting this surge.
Although four million doses have been set aside by the Biden administration for Indonesia, an additional one million will be sent “soon,” although an official didn’t specify when. Moderna, a two-dose vaccine, is the most widely delivered vaccine from the US in one flight.
The complex task of distributing vaccines around the world has been a challenge for the Biden administration. White House coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients, and Jake Sullivan, national security adviser, have collaborated with many federal agencies including the Defense Department to coordinate the process. They also ensure that vaccines are delivered free of strings.
