Canadian talented Shay Mitchell, who has dominated television, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok–commanding all of them with equal grace, always appears to be connected.
A strong presence on various platforms means that her ex- Pretty Little Liars actress has a constant stream of content to share about her life’s work and personal experiences regardless of her acting profession, lifestyle brands, travel experiences (which has inspired the basis for her YouTube show, Shaycations) or the life she shares with her partner Matte Babel and daughter Atlas. But the secret behind her social media success is less about the fact that she’s an “online persona” and more to be able to know the right time to switch off.
“I really have fun with [social media], and that is the key word,” says the 34-year old via Zoom at her residence at Los Angeles. “Once it ceases to be fun and I stop, I switch off. I don’t feel pressured to continue shooting. I could go for several months or even years without shooting any thing, and I’m content with that as I have a positive relationship with social media.”
The self-awareness and the selectiveness is also evident in the way Mitchell is able to approach her entrepreneurial pursuits and collaborative projects. Her two business ventures –luggage and accessory brand Beis along with sparkling tequila that is ready to drink, Onda, that was launched this summer — were primary interests. “Travel and tequila, you know what I’m saying?” she says. “Those [brands] came from doing what I love and [offer] products that I love selfishly and want other people to love as well.”
The year 2020 was the time that Mitchell was named the spokesperson for the Cacharel Yes I Am collection of scents which is an association that is close to her heart. “I remember seeing a bottle of Cacharel on my mom’s dressing table when I was growing up,” Mitchell explains Mitchell about her connection to the legendary French brand. “Every morning, before she got to work, putting on somewas one of the first things I’d watch her do. It’s a full-circle experience.” Mitchell was also attracted by the collection as it is a representation of multi-faceted modern women who don’t have a definition of particular thing.
The fourth scent of the brand called”Yes, I’m Glorious is her favorite. “It has a mix of peach and vanilla with an undertone of sandalwood,” she states. “It’s sultry, but it’s also flirty.” The scent is about self-assurance and Mitchell’s scent is appropriately, “Do what you love.”
While she’s visible to the world, Mitchell does prioritize her privacy. “If I have to question anything [that I’m about to post], then I’m not putting it up,” Mitchell states. “And whatever I do put up is fair game to ask me about.” This is the same for staying off online negative comments. Mitchell is always listening to the feedback of customers and fans but she doesn’t respond to Trolls.
Motherhood determines how she decides to spend her days. Atlas was born two years ago, and Mitchell is happy for having spent the past year at home , making memories with her rather than always on the move. “Being able to see her change every single day truly was the best gift I could have had as a new mom,” Mitchell declares.

The pandemic also reinforced the way Mitchell would like to lead her own life: in touch with things that are important to her. In the moment, that’s Atlas as well as family and friends as she makes up for the lost time spent in person, not conversations via Zoom as well as FaceTime. “The next time I see my parents or family in real life, it will be just that–without a phone.”
