What if Morbius were a villain in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2? The Venom movies introduced us to this character. The first one took place in San Francisco, where he was created by the FBI’s Alberto Rodriguez. The sequel’s villain, however, will be based in New York. As an added bonus, it’d give a much-needed change of pace to the franchise.
Morbius first appearance in comics was in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. The name of the ship, Murnau, was a reference to the director of the very first vampire movie, Nosferatu, FW Murnau. Interestingly, this movie will not be an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. As such, the villain will not kill Martine. In fact, the villain will actually jump off of the ship to avoid slaying Martine. As a side note, Morbius first appearance in a comic book is a reference to the Dracula character that debuted in 1922.
Having a character like Morbius in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be an excellent move. Fans of the character are likely to flock to the sequel and want to see him fight Venom. In fact, the Venom character has become a bona fide star. Sony should give the Venom franchise to Feige. While a Venom connection is the equivalent of force-feeding a Marvel IP to its fan base, there are still many possibilities for this character.
It’s hard to tell how the character will fit into the Spider-Man universe. It’s likely that Morbius is a nod to the original Sinister Six and is part of the Sony Universe. After all, it is the Venom movie that introduced Michael Keaton’s Vulture. Sony’s universe is moving in that direction and is looking to expand the world of the Spider-Man series.
