A Colorado Rockies legend will receive one of the franchise’s highest honors on Sunday, August 23, when a permanent bronze statue of Hall of Famer Larry Walker is unveiled outside Coors Field before the Rockies host the Cleveland Guardians.
The statue reveal is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Mountain Time at 20th and Blake Street, with the ballpark gates opening at 11 a.m. The Rockies and Guardians are scheduled to play at 1:10 p.m.
A Permanent Tribute to a Rockies Legend
Walker will be on hand for the unveiling, which will be followed by a special pregame celebration recognizing his career and place in Colorado baseball history.
The bronze statue is being created by Colorado sculptors George and Mark Lundeen of Lundeen Sculptures. The Rockies announced the statue alongside plans for a separate Todd Helton statue, which is scheduled to be unveiled at Coors Field in September.
The ceremony gives Rockies fans an opportunity to see Walker honored outside the ballpark where he became one of the most accomplished players in franchise history.
Walker’s Legacy in Colorado
Walker played for the Rockies from 1995 through 2004 and became the first player in franchise history to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
During his Colorado career, Walker was a four time All Star, won five Gold Glove Awards and captured three National League batting titles. He also won the 1997 National League MVP Award, which remains the only MVP award in Rockies history.
Walker was a central figure in the Rockies’ high powered offenses of the 1990s, playing alongside stars including Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, Andres Galarraga and Ellis Burks.
His No. 33 jersey has also been retired by the Rockies, further cementing his status as one of the most important players in the club’s history.
First 15,000 Fans Will Receive a Replica
The celebration will extend beyond the statue ceremony.
The first 15,000 fans through the gates on August 23 will receive a replica Larry Walker statue. The giveaway gives fans attending the Guardians game a physical souvenir tied directly to the historic occasion.
That combination of a live unveiling, Walker’s appearance and the limited giveaway makes Sunday’s game more than a typical regular season afternoon at Coors Field.
Rockies Face Cleveland After the Ceremony
Once the pregame festivities are complete, the Rockies will take on the Cleveland Guardians in a scheduled 1:10 p.m. Mountain Time matchup.
The game is part of a weekend series between Colorado and Cleveland, but the statue ceremony is expected to be the day’s defining event for the home crowd.
The Rockies are also promoting a University of Utah ticket package for the August 23 game, adding another fan-focused element to the afternoon.
Why the Ceremony Matters
The statue represents a permanent connection between Walker and Coors Field.
Walker spent a decade in Colorado and became one of the defining players of the franchise’s early years. His Hall of Fame induction in 2020 added another milestone to a career that already included a National League MVP award, batting titles and multiple defensive honors.
For the Rockies, honoring Walker with a statue also puts him alongside another franchise icon. Todd Helton’s statue is scheduled for unveiling on September 19, giving Colorado two permanent tributes to its Hall of Fame players during the 2026 season.
A Special Day at Coors Field
The August 23 ceremony is expected to bring together longtime Rockies fans, current supporters and baseball followers who remember Walker’s impact on the franchise.
With Walker scheduled to attend and thousands of replica statues being distributed, the event offers fans a chance to be part of a significant moment in Rockies history.
The statue will remain outside Coors Field long after Sunday’s game is over, making the August 23 unveiling a permanent celebration of one of the most accomplished players ever to wear a Rockies uniform.
