Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has hailed the “heroic message” of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) as an important step in the fight against domestic violence. Since the passage of the law in 2013, Jolie has become a vocal supporter of the bill and has made it a point to meet with Congress members to discuss the need to renew VAWA. She has also written to lawmakers in support of the act, urging them to pass it.
On Wednesday, Angelina Jolie returned to Washington, D.C. to help bring attention to the renewed Violence Against Women Act. The Act, which was passed in 1994, has been in effect since and provides basic protections for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. In fact, there have been no amendments to the Violence Against Women Against Woman Act in 10 years. Senator Dick Durban, who chairs the Environmental Protection Agency, also praised Jolie’s speech, praising the law as a “heroic message” and a “brave step.”

She was accompanied by her daughter, Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt. The actress cited numerous conflicts and wars, including the eight-year civil war in Yemen, the 11th anniversary of the Syrian civil war, and the recent election results in Ukraine. She said the fight for women’s rights should remain at the forefront of our minds.

While the Violence Against Women Act is an important law, it is not being amended enough to help victims. Last year, Angelina Jolie visited Washington D.C. to advocate for anti-gun legislation. She shared a picture of her daughter, Zahara, with Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee of Texas. It’s not a coincidence that Jolie would be speaking out in support of a cause she cares about.
She is an advocate for displaced families all over the world. She was in Yemen a few days ago. She has spoken out about various conflicts, citing the eight-year civil war in Yemen and the 11th anniversary of the Syrian civil war. During the last decade, she has been vocal about the VAWA. During her speech, she said that it was important to continue advocating for women and girls in conflict zones.
