Torrid opened its first store in 2001 and an international store in Canada (Toronto) in August 2015. and has been owned by Hot Topic since 2007. In 2014, Torrid opened the first of their concept stores known as “Torrid +jcp.” The +J stands for plus-size and also allows for full collaboration with the JCPenney department store. This is a new style of a Torrid store that includes a full-size department as well as the Torrid branded clothing and accessories, making it one of the first plus-size retailers to utilize their own brand within a department store. Torrid was founded as an independent store in 2001 and purchased by Hot Topic, Inc. (now known as Truworth Group) in August 2007. Torrid is known for pushing the boundaries on plus size fashion, particularly in swimwear and lingerie where they sell products considered “naughty sexy” while their main competition usually goes for a more conservative look.

Torrid distributes a magazine, “Torrid Treats” and has released several DVDs featuring their clothing. The company also participates in the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as one of its main charities for fundraising. The first store opened in Sunderland, England in 2011 as part of parent company Unique Luxury Brands Ltd’s expansion plan. A total of 24 stores were opened by the end of the Republic of Ireland, with some additional concessions within the House of UK and 2012 across.

Torrid has nearly 100 stores across the UK. The brand also operates concessions in House of Fraser department stores, with 22 concession sites open in 2016.

The company is based within the Unique Fashion Group headquarters on MediaCityUK in Salford, England. Torrid offers women’s shoes and boots up to a UK shoe size 8.5, and a range of footbeds to customize shoes with different heel heights, finishes, and comfort levels.
