Facebook announced Monday that all US employees will be required to wear masks at company offices, even though they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The new policy will be in effect from Wednesday through further notice. A spokeswoman for the company stated that “the health and safety of our workers and our neighbors in the community remains the top priority.”

The spokeswoman stated that “Given the increasing numbers of COVID cases and the latest data on COVID variants” and the growing number of local requirements, Facebook is reinstating its mask requirement in all U.S. offices. This applies regardless of employee’s current vaccination status.

The mask policy comes the week after the social-media giant announced that staff coming into US offices must be fully vaccinated.

It was prompted in part by the updated guidelines of The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recommend that people who have been vaccinated wear masks indoors to prevent transmission of the virus. It comes as COVID-19 cases are spiking in the US, fueled by the more infectious Delta variant.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, also followed suit and said that all employees should wear masks to work, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated.
